First date for drop-offs is Saturday at Abe Okpik Hall
People in Iqaluit can drop off their hazardous waste at Abe Okpik Hall on May 25, the city announced Tuesday.
City officials will accept waste that day from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The public is encouraged to “take advantage of the hazardous waste collection day by coming out and safely disposing of these unwanted or unusable items,” the public service announcement said.
Hazardous waste is often toxic or flammable and includes anti-freeze, adhesives, aerosols, automotive and household batteries, cleaners, corrosives, fuels, mercury, oxidizers, poisons, paint cans and spray paint, pharmaceuticals and solvents, according to the announcement.
The city will not accept electronics waste, used oil, oil filters, oil containers, tires, propane tanks, biological waste, infectious waste, radioactive waste, explosives, ammunition or industrial waste.
Residents should not remove labels from the waste to help “identify the substances for proper disposal,” the announcement said.
There will be more hazardous waste collection dates in the coming months:
- June 29 at the Elders Qammaq;
- July 27 at AWG arena;
- Aug. 31 at Happy Valley (between houses 411 and 413);
- Sept. 28 at air base – building 621;
- Oct. 26 at air base – building 621.
City officials will be accepting waste on all these dates from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The city said more public service announcements will be issued closer to each date.
