I created garden furniture using an item most people throw away and tub of paint

May 23, 2024

WITH British weather being notoriously wet and windy, some people refuse to buy expensive garden furniture – especially as it will only be used for a few days each year.

One gardening whizz has come up with a genius solution though, by using scrap materials that often get thrown away.

Rather than spending a small fortune on accessories for her garden, Jackie Scotchbrooke Reed decided to make her own DIY seating.

Having undertaken the ambitious project, she showed the incredible results with a large bench, stools and table added to her decking.

Sharing her results on Facebook, members of the DIY Gardening on a Budget Official group couldn’t believe how good the furniture looked.

Nor could they get over the material she used.

Posting a photo in the group, the thrifty gardener revealed that the stunning set had been ‘made from pallets’ enitely.

Even more impressively, she’d used masonry paint to add a bold pop of colour in the space.

There was also storage space, as the pallets had been neatly stacked on top of each to create shelves in the bench and seating.

Jackie had even added cushions and extra bar stools in similar tones, which made her space feel extra inviting.

Unsurprisingly, her clever DIY has gone viral in the gardening group – with others gushing in the comments about how great her space looks.

“Looks great and love the colour. Well done,” wrote one, with another adding: “Awesome job!!!”

If you are tempted to try this DIY for yourself, you’ll be relieved to know that you can often find wooden pallets at supermarkets and larger stores for free.

You just need to ask staff if they have any they are disposing of, with most getting new shipments of products on pallets every other day.

Alternatively, you can pick them up from local selling sites, like Facebook Marketplace, for just a few pounds.

Not only are wooden pallets cheap, they are a great material to work with as they are lightweight and can be used for countless projects.

For those that aren’t DIY whizzes like Jackie, you could start by making a simple planter for your garden using a small pallet.

Alternatively, you can also use them to create raised flowerbeds – especially if you feel more confident with DIY projects.

The possibilities are endless and even better, you can pick up most extra supplies you need from DIY stores and online.

For instance, Jackie revealed that she’d bought masonary paint for her project off Amazon with a 1L tub starting from as little as per can.

If you weren’t already sold on this DIY project, you can also find items like long nails, screws and brackets for just a few pounds in stores like B&Q.

Who said doing DIY projects had to be hard?
