ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Friday marked a significant milestone for as they unveiled Anchorage’s first furniture bank, operating behind the scenes for over a year and finally housed within their community center.

Shiloh Community Housing Incorporated has been working to aid the community for years and now offers the furniture bank to bridge essential gaps.

Delmonicia Williams, President & CEO, said the bank will take in anything people need to sit, sleep, and eat with consideration.

“We want to make sure that we maintain the dignity of those people we are helping, so we’re going to be selective on the things that we donate,” Williams said.

While the concept isn’t new, will be the first in the municipality to collect and distribute furniture free of charge to those in need. Williams highlighted the urgency of community needs.

“We have housed over 35 homes already, and the furniture never even touched the furniture bank,” she said. “So the need is great. So now we have the opportunity to store furniture until people need it.”

Phase one of the community resource center renovation, initiated in 2021, includes the furniture bank as part of the warehouse renovation. Williams says that while the primary focus is aiding those transitioning from homelessness, anyone needing home goods can access support through the center.

With no application process, individuals must only contact the center to select and receive the necessary furniture.

A detailed list of acceptable donations is available on their website for those interested in contributing. Williams invites the Anchorage community to participate in this endeavor by donating or reaching out for assistance.
