The new NDA government under the leadership of Narendra Modi will centre its policies around middle class and household savings as Budget Day approaches.
Modi, who is all set to take oath as the prime minister for the third consecutive term on June 9, in his speech after getting elected as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance, said that the upper middle and middle class will be the focus point in his next term.
‘Good governance, quality of life’
In his speech, Modi emphasised the role played by the middle class was exceptional and that they will be the “driving force of Bharat’s growth story”.
“We will continue to ensure welfare of our people, and will continue to deliver ‘quality of life’ to all. “In the next 10 years, good governance, development, quality of life and my determination is to reduce government interference in people’s life,” the leader said.
His recent statements reflect the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 100-day agenda of the new government which Modi spoke of multiple times during campaigning.
Manifesto hints at what might come
BJP’s manifesto might be a good source to look at what can be expected in the upcoming budget.
The ‘Sankalp Patra’ promised to further the benefits of people as well as add new beneficiaries under pre-existing schemes.
For instance, Ayushman Bharat’s coverage would be increased to accommodate senior citizens too. The elderly would get doorstep deliveries of government services, the manifesto said.
Meanwhile, in order to safeguard small traders and businessmen from thefts and accidents the government would also launch an insurance scheme, as per the Sankalp Patra.
When will budget be held?
The union budget will be held in July, a month after the new government is formed.
According to a report by Financial Express, the budget will be presented by the finance ministry sometime between July 10 and 12.
An interim budget was presented by the outgoing finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in February.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the budget was presented on July 5, a month after Narendra Modi was sworn in as the prime minister.
