ATLANTIC – The Atlantic Beautification Committee discussed the landscaping plan for downtown Atlantic and updating the entrance signs during its meeting last Wednesday.
Staff at Robinson Landscaping presented an option to add more flowers to the downtown area, after being asked for that option, but during discussion it was noted that they had questioned if more flowers were added could they be walked on more than usual with RAGBRAI riders in town and also said more water would be needed for more flowers.
Committee members questioned if more flowers were needed, and the amount of water that would be needed for the plants. Committee members thought if extra plants had already been purchased, could they be planted near the new entrance sign or other entrance signs around Atlantic?
Atlantic Chamber Executive Director Bailey Smith said she would contact Robinson Landscaping to see if they had purchased plants, and discuss the topic at a future meeting.
In other business, City Administrator John Lund said he had visited with staff at JJ Design about updating current entrance signs, and they needed more information concerning the best design for the signs. It was noted that the design could likely be similar to the newest entrance sign design at the corner of Highway 6 and 71 next to Wal-Mart.
In other business, Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett reported that she hoped the group that installs flagpoles for cities would contact her in the days following Wednesday’s meeting. The committee was considering a recommendation for a flagpole to be installed near the new entrance sign.
